In logo design, negative space is the empty space around or in between the design elements. This space is usually left blank, and works with the positive design elements to form imagery, shape an idea, or convey a message.
While negative space logos are often very simple designs, the use of positive and negative elements can create a dynamic effect that’s often more intriguing to viewers than positive-only designs.
Negative space is versatile to work with and can be used for a variety of effects. You’re probably already familiar with many examples of it in logo design, such as the ‘s’ in the USA logo, or more subtly employed to include subliminal messages such as FedEx’s forward pointing arrow.
Take a look at some of these striking designs for more negative space inspiration!
